Songs of 2011: 20-11

2011 has seen new acts, comebacks and second albums. And yes, ironically Adele has made it to the list.

20. Adele- Rolling In the Deep (Jamie xx Reshuffle)

Probably the least offensive Adele song (i.e. won’t make people cry). The real focus of the song is the transformation by Jamie xx

19. Florence & The Machine- Heartlines

A welcomed comeback , combining intense sounds and typical Florence metaphors

18. Chad Valley- Now That I’m Real (How Does It Feel?)

Provides us with excellent remixes (see Foals-Spanish Sahara and Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs- Trouble) but this song shows that Chad Valley is a promising artist

17. DSL- Supa Love

A throwback to old school hip-hop, and even better in French (even though I have no idea what they are saying…)

16. The Strokes- Under Cover of Darkness

Guitar music still lives with The Strokes sticking to their roots despite another comeback

15. Mark Ronson & The Business Intl- Record Collection 2012 (Logo Remix)

So we had Jay Z and Kanye join forces but people ignored this collaboration of Mark Ronson and Pharrell Williams (and I would have much preferred their faces merged on an album cover…)

14. Cults- Go Outside

Perfect song to go outside and be in the light all day

13. Lana Del Rey- Video Games

Effortless vocal, reflective but not offensive (see above)

12. Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs- Moon Hits the Mirrorball

Proves that electronic sounds can be carefully constructed (refer to BEP- Time of My Life for how it can go wrong…)

11. Lykke Li- I Follow Rivers

Fresh and raw sounding, repetition done well
